Brutal Curse is a Young Adult Fairy Tale retelling of Alice in Wonderland.  And doesn’t it have the most stunning cover???

About The Book

Brutal Curse EbookPrince Carden of Tierney lost his home, family, and claim to the throne in one fell swoop when he rebelled against his father for a cause he knew was right. Instead of wallowing in despair, he embarks on a new journey, starting a new life on the Southern Isle. When he finds himself caught in a web woven by the famously ruthless fae queen, Coeur, he insults her and she vows to teach him the most difficult and heart-breaking lesson he will ever learn: that humans are incapable of love, and that hearts are beastly things.

Arabella wasn’t really living, she was existing and surviving as best she could. A chance encounter with Carden changes everything for her, but the deadly game he’s dragged her into might cost her life.

Still, she agrees to play. The rules the fae queen gives them are vague, and it’s obvious there are things Queen Coeur isn’t telling them. She’s sure of it. But what she does know is that together, she and Carden must pass a series of tests and trials. If they fail, game over. But if they succeed, she just might be able to restore her family and carve out the life she’s always envisioned.

IMG_2180Among her superrich friends, Lacey Winters never minded being the “poor one.” That is, until her tuition money and big dreams vanish overnight. And he’ll do anything to prove he’s sincere. But pretty soon it’ll be Lacey’s turn to prove that this is not just a game.

About The Author

I believe growing up in a really small town gives a person a little advantage when it comes to the imagination. You need one or you go mad.Tara Brown

Needless to say, mine saved me. After it got me into trouble first, that is. That’s the problem with a vivid imagination, all the lies you tell.

I am happily married with two daughters. I have two giant dogs, two savage cats, and a penchant for a glass of red. Also, I drag my bread through the sauce. I can’t help myself, bread is life. According to my age, I am meant to be a responsible adult, but it isn’t going well at all. I would still head off to Hogwarts tomorrow and I suspect there isn’t a single wardrobe I haven’t crept into, hoping to find the door to Narnia. And don’t even get me started on the King’s Road, I get lost.

Fortunately, I am an international bestseller so I have wormed my way into a quirky or eccentric category.

 Thank God for that.

Review | Touched | A.J. Aalto

Touched is the first book in A.J. Aalto’s Urban Fantasy series The Marnie Baranuik Files.

About The Book

The media has a nickname for Marnie Baranuik, though she’d rather they didn’t; they call her the Great White Shark, a rare dual-talented forensic psychic. Twice-Touched by 30361246the Blue Sense–which gives her the ability to feel the emotions of others, and read impressions left behind on objects–Marnie also has a doctorate in preternatural biology and a working knowledge of the dark arts. She is considered without peer in the psychic community.

Then her first big FBI case ended with a bullet in one shoulder and a chip on the other, a queasy heart and a serial killer in the wind, leaving her a public flop and a private wreck. When the FBI’s preternatural crimes unit tracks her down at a remote mountain lodge for her insight on a local case, her quiet retirement is promptly besieged by a stab-happy starlet, a rampaging ghoul, and a vampire-hunting jackass in tight Wranglers. Marnie figures the only real mystery is which one will kill her first.

Too mean to die young, backed up by friends in cold places, and running with a mouth as demure as a cannon’s blast, Marnie Baranuik is about to discover that there’s no such thing as quitting time when you’re Touched.

My Thoughts

Touched was my first novel written by author AJ Aalto and what a great start to a new reading venture.

Touched is an unique twist for anyone looking to move past the overdone world of sparkly romanticized vampires.  This is not a typical paranormal romance novel where the vampire bites the heroine and they fall in love.  Touched is far more than that.  With strong sexual references and lots of steamy tension, AJ Aalto takes the reader down a wonderlandic path of pent up lust and desire.

The characters of Touched are so well contrived that you can easily have them imprinted into the walls of your mind.

I thoroughly enjoyed Marnie Baranuik’s personality in this book.  She is strong willed and determined and a bit clueless, in the most charming way.  Oh and not to mention quirky as hell.  She had me laughing more times that not.

Miss Aalto is a clever and imaginative writer.  Touched was an original and inventive read.  Witty and entertaining from the first page to the last.

The is a must read for all of you Urban Fantasy/ Paranomal readers looking for a change in pace.  I give Touched 4.5 stars and I see book 2 Death Rejoices in my very near future.

About The Author

AJ Aalto is the author of the paranormal mystery series The Marnie Baranuik Files. Aalto is an unrepentant liar and a writer of  blathering nonsense offset by factual gore. When535773_10151501733540276_821915275_23575380_201613986_n not working on her novels, you can find her singing Monty Python songs in the shower, eavesdropping on perfect strangers, stalking her eye doctor, or failing at one of her fruitless hobbies. Generally a fan of anyone with a passion for the ridiculous, she has a weak spot for smug pseudo-intellectuals and narcissistic jerks; readers will find her work littered with flawed monsters and oodles of snark.

AJ cannot say no to a Snickers bar and has been known to swallow her gum.

My Thoughts

I received an ARC copy of Beauty’s Cursed Beast in exchange for an honest review.

This was my first book by Mary E Twomey.  I had not yet read the first book in the Cursed Beauty series and although the character from the first book make appearances it is not necessary to have read it.

Let me start by saying that I am not really a huge fan of fairy tales but after reading the blurb about Beauty’s Cursed Beast I was very much intrigued to read it.

I was hooked right from the first few pages.  There was no lull in this story for me.  I greedily turned every page until the very last one.  Miss Twomey took this children’s tale and renewed it, making it fresh and exhilarating and making it a tale made for an adult.

She painted vivid mind art with her words, taking you right into the story alongside Adam and Belle.  Making you fall in love with a beast who was really nothing more than lost man who needed love.

” All I want is for you to stay with me – to remember the man I was to you when all that’s left if the beast”

Beauty’s Cursed Beast in the perfect book to snuggle up to when you need some feel good words and the hope of something magical.

5 stars to Mary E Twomey for making me fall in love with a fairytale.

Review | Katerina | James Frey

About The Book

A kiss, a touch. A smile and a beating heart. Love 38511216and sex and dreams, art and drugs and the madness of youth. Betrayal and heartbreak, regret and pain, the melancholy of age. Katerina, the explosive new novel by America’s most controversial writer, is a sweeping love story alternating between 1992 Paris and Los Angeles in 2018.

At its center are a young writer and a young model on the verge of fame, both reckless, impulsive, addicted, and deeply in love. Twenty-five years later, the writer is rich, famous, and numb, and he wants to drive his car into a tree, when he receives an anonymous message that draws him back to the life, and possibly the love, he abandoned years prior. Written in the same percussive, propulsive, dazzling, breathtaking style as A Million Little Pieces, Katerina echoes and complements that most controversial of memoirs, and plays with the same issues of fiction and reality that created, nearly destroyed, and then recreated James Frey in the American imagination

My Thoughts

I was given an ARC copy of Katerina for my honest opinion and review.

I have read many titles by James Frey over the years and love his style of writing. I have always devoured his work.

Katerina was different from his past works.  It is a love story set in both the past and present going back and forth between Paris 1992 and Los Angeles2017.

While the book reads more like poetry, similar to a Million Little Pieces, I found it difficult to follow or to stay engaged.  The lack of punctuation actually takes away from the storyline and is very off putting. I almost didn’t finish.

So go in with eyes wide open especially if you are a fan of James Frey’s previous writings.

Overall I give Katerina 3 stars.

I feel that he had so much more to give and didn’t quite make it to the finish line.
